Thinking of a career in real estate?

There are lots of career paths in real estate. They include property management, administration and selling houses. The one I get asked about the most and know best is selling houses, so I’ll focus on that. I started my career over 20 years ago and was very lucky to work for excellent bosses that really gave me a good opportunity to make a start. Some people start as a PA while others start as a full agent. There are pros and cons for each one. For the sake of learning the trade and having a more stable wage starting as a PA is probably the safest way to go when considering longevity. After a year or 2 you should have picked up the knowledge to be a full agent on your own.

Over my time in real estate, I’ve seen many people come and go. I can think of somebody that didn’t last the first day. It can be a tough industry to make a start in, however if you can get through the first 6-12 months it really is a great career path. My advice for anyone starting a career in real estate is learn as much as you can as quickly as possible, be honest and importantly, be yourself.

People often think of the glamorous side of real estate when considering a career and to be honest it can be a glamorous job. Think of the pressure of auction day and pulling out an amazing result that has the vendors wrapped and buyer’s ecstatic with their purchase. Any good agent will be quick to tell you about the vendor meetings, buyer appointments, solicitor follow up, 100’s of phone calls and open houses that lead up to the big day. Real estate however, gives you a buzz that most 9-5 jobs just can’t match.

My first boss would tell me because real estate in commission based you get paid what you are worth. He meant work hard, always upskill and you would be very well financially rewarded for your efforts. (Have you ever seen a good real estate agent drive a cheap car?) Most people can think of a job that have had, that they were underappreciated financially compared to their worth to the company. If you are considering a career in real estate as always Real Estate Support is here for you if you need any advice.
